Kenya | Youths in Nairobi Slums: Socio-economic Isolation, Discrimination, and the Impact of Inter-group Income Generation Activities | JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development | 2025 |
JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) and AI (Accept International) launched a project from December 2022 aiming at helping unemployed youth in Nairobi’s Eastleigh, Majengo, and Mathare areas to generate income through entrepreneurship by training on smartphone repair skills. The project included training youth in repair skills, connecting them with business networks, and training trainers (ToTs) to facilitate the program. Building on this initiative, JICA began a study titled “Youths in Nairobi Slums: Socio-economic Isolation, Discrimination, and the Impact of Inter-group Income Generation Activities.” The study explores ways to reduce tensions between marginalized ethnic, religious, and social groups in Nairobi by fostering cooperation through intergroup interactions during the creation of market opportunities. It also investigates the reality of discrimination among youth and the potential risks of criminalization and radicalization linked to these issues. The research project aims to evaluate the short-term impacts of these interventions on economic, social, and psychological measures related to intergroup relations, as well as the likelihood of youth engaging in risky activities. |

Kenya | EX-POST EVALUATION Mombasa Port Development Project Phase 2 (L/A No. KE-P30) | JICA/Metrics Works Consultant | 2025 |
Offers Local Consultancy services to the External evaluator; the Evaluation Department of JICA, in principle, carries out external ex-post evaluation on all JICA projects which cost JPY 1 billion or above and other projects deemed to provide valuable insight within two to three years after project completion. Ex-post evaluation focuses on whether project activities have been carried out appropriately to realize their development outcomes, to what extent the project contributed to development results, and on how well their effectiveness will be sustained. A basic approach is to assess projects against stated objectives, benchmarks and expected outcomes. With such objectives and to ensure impartiality and transparency, the Evaluation Department of JICA appoints and dispatches third party evaluators, which is called external ex-post evaluation. |
