We are pleased to share that a project facilitated by The Grassroots Walkers Ltd. as a consulting partner has been published by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The project, implemented in Kenya from October 2025 to February 2026, sought to address period poverty by promoting menstrual health awareness and improving access to sanitary products among girls and women in Nairobi and Kisii.
In Kenya, approximately 54% of girls face challenges in accessing sanitary products, while menstruation remains surrounded by social and cultural taboos that can make it difficult to openly discuss menstrual health.
The initiative was implemented through collaboration between JICA Kenya Office and SOFY Unicharm East Africa, with menstrual health awareness sessions conducted in Nairobi and Kisii. The initiative served as a trial of private-sector-led activities that combine business promotion with meaningful social impact.
As a consulting partner, The Grassroots Walkers Ltd. supported the implementation and facilitation of activities on the ground, contributing to efforts to strengthen menstrual health knowledge, awareness and access to menstrual products.
SOFY, a feminine care brand owned by Japanese company Unicharm, began manufacturing and selling sanitary pads in Kenya in January 2025. Through affordable options—including the sale of individual sanitary pads—the company has sought to make menstrual products more accessible to women and girls who may not be able to afford a full package.
Beyond product access, SOFY Unicharm East Africa is also committed to providing quality menstrual health information and empowering girls through increased knowledge and awareness.
